History of Dom Perignon
Who was Dom Perignon? Moet et Chandon Dom Perignon Who was Dom Perignon? Dom Perignon is known as the most prestigious cuvee of Moet et Chandon House and one of the most famous champagne in the world. But did you know that Dom Perignon was acutally a monk involved in the development of Champagne as a sparkling wine. Pierre Perignon was born in 1640, he was the son of a clerk to a local judge. At 19, he became a Benedictin monk in the Abbey of Saint-Vannes at Verdun. At only 28, he became the cellar master of the Abbey of Hautvilliers! The first record of sparkling wines production in France dates back to 1531 in Limoux (south of France), that is about one century before Dom Perignon's birth. But he was a great wine grower and maker and he studied how to blend wines. According to the legend, he was the man who found out how to avoid corks' explosion due to pressure inside the bottle using a wire. Dom Perignon died in 1715. He was buried in the middles of the vines.
Moet et Chandon Dom Perignon In 1794, Moet et Chandon bought the walls and the vineyards of the former Abbey of Hautvilliers. At the end of the 20's, Champagne House Moet et Chandon decided to give the name of Dom Perignon to their new prestigious cuvee. Benefitting from a good marketing, the reputation of cuvee Dom Perignon soon spred in countries all over the world. Nowadays, cuvee Dom Perignon is probably one of the most famous Champagne wine in the world, synonymous with glamour and success.
